WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Police said medics took a boy to the hospital Friday afternoon after someone followed him to a Metro station and shot him there.
The Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) said it received a call about a shooting inside the Georgia Ave-Petworth station shortly after 2:45 p.m. Officers arrived and found a boy shot in the hip in the unpaid mezzanine area.
MTPD said it expected the boy to survive his injuries.
As a result of the shooting, the west entrance of the Metro station was closed for about three hours while MTPD officers investigated and looked for the person responsible for the shooting.
Locals are fed up with the violence.
“The city needs a change. They need to stop the violence. There’s a lot of there’s a lot of things going on in the community. We need to bring funding in the community,” said Javon Moore. “That’s why I’m starting the basketball training league for Washington, D.C. because the kids need something to do.”
In the meantime, police presence is a concern for some.
“I see police quite frequently. Yes. In their squad cars outside the Metro,” said Robyn Hiestand.
Several people told DC News Now they want to see more officers actually inside the station.
“I wish something would be done. I wish our elected officials would do something about it,” Hiestand said. “It’s unfortunate and I hope the kid makes a full recovery.”
