Frederick snow plow company prepare for expected snowstorm https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/maryland/frederick-county-md/frederick-snow-plow-company-prepare-for-expected-snowstorm/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 03:25:57 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688742 FREDERICK, Md. (DC News Now) -- Crews are gearing up for tomorrow's expected snowstorm in parts of western Maryland.

John Klapac is the owner of Winter Management Associates, a snow removal firm in Frederick. He's been in the snow plowing industry for about 20 years.

"We have 24 people handling sidewalks and we have eight people handling the snow plows," said Kaplac.

He's preparing his team to get ready to plow snow from parking lots on Saturday ahead of an expected snowstorm in western Maryland.

Mountain View Diner is one of his 18 commercial clients.

John says what he's expected to make this weekend is up in the air.

"Last year we made nothing. This year we don't know. It all depends on the weather. I have associates who spend upwards of $7,000 for commercial liability insurance and have nothing to show for it," said Kaplac.

He said his crews are ready and on standby.

"We've loaded up assault and ice-controlled materials already, and the trucks are loaded," Kaplac added. "It looks like we are going to go out at 9 tomorrow morning, weather permitting."

Student who experienced homelessness becomes teacher in Washington County https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/maryland/washington-county/student-who-experienced-homelessness-becomes-teacher-in-washington-county/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 22:40:17 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688481 WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- According to Washington County Public Schools, about 700 students are currently experiencing homelessness.

Alyssa Miller was experiencing homelessness while she was at Boonsboro High School, which impacted her focus on school and attendance.

"I kind of acted out a lot," Miller said. "I was always in the principal's office or with guidance counselors and I didn't have a lot of motivation because there wasn't anyone like making me go to school, checking my grades."

During that time she found it difficult to believe in herself until teachers and staff took her under their wing.

"I just saw a lot of people believed in me," Miller explained. "When someone would try to help, I would tell them, I'm not a charity case and I don't need anyone's help, but they said I'm an investment that they're putting time and effort into me because they see my drive."

That drive, and mentorship, led Miller to become a reading apprentice and then a paraprofessional at Emma K Doub Elementary School.

"She just has this natural ability to build a relationship with a track child and to identify with them and obviously, that's a lot because her background emulates a lot of the same backgrounds of our students," the principal of Emma K Doub Elementary School, Stacy Henson, said.

Miller said she is teaching her students things that they might not be learning at home.

"Just trying to push them, trying to give them something to look forward to, rewarding them for their good behaviors," Miller explained.

Now that she is on the path to becoming an educator herself, she hopes she will be someone's motivation who may be in her shoes.

"Resources help you so much," Miller said. "You can be an investment, don't make yourself a charity case."

Washington County road crews make preparations for weekend winter weather https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/maryland/washington-county/washington-county-road-crews-make-preparations-for-weekend-winter-weather/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 22:32:10 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688489 WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- Hagerstown area road crews are making preparations for the weekend snow storm.

And so too are winter mountain sports enthusiasts such as skiing and snowboarding.

Precipitation is expected to hit Washington County at daybreak Saturday. Plows and salt trucks will pay extra attention to the western communities of the county.

"Those areas seem to be the hardest hit, according to the model," says Doug Levine with the county highway operations.

Levine gave some advice for highway drivers.

"Be careful and maintain a safe distance behind our guys," Levine said. "Remember that sometimes they can't see you with all the salt and it's not good for your [car's] paint."

Meanwhile, at Whitetail Mountain resort in Pennsylvania just northwest of Hagerstown, Tim Koons is ready for the snowfall.

"We're super excited about the snow coming on top of our manmade snow," Koons said. "Often people ski for the first time when they see natural snow so we expect to see a lot of beginners this weekend."

Levine observes that "first snow of the season is usually a challenge" for employees.

"Some of them haven't been in a truck for two years since we haven't gotten any snow."

Nonetheless, Levine is confident about his operation.

"We've got a lot of good drivers and a lot of good people here," he said. "We'll fight this one like we do all the other ones."

Dry January has benefits, challenges https://www.dcnewsnow.com/whats-going-around/dry-january-has-benefits-challenges/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:09:20 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688397 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The new year means new resolutions.

One of the more popular resolution is to quit drinking for the first month of the year, otherwise known as Dry January.

It started as a social media movement that has exploded in popularity. Dry January is meant to encourage people to rethink their relationship with alcohol, take a break from it and become aware of their drinking habits.

The month-long feat to be sober has health benefits, according to Dr. Elspeth Ritchie, chair of Psychiatry at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

“It's going to depend on the person, but there's really no downside unless you're heavily addicted, in which case you should consult a medical professional so you'll feel better about yourself.

Ritchie said it could also help with weight loss.

"You'll likely have more of a spring in your step and you'll know that you can do it,” she said.

Ritchie said there are challenges, though, for some people partaking in Dry January.

“One [has] the ability to stop drinking. That can be harder than you think, especially if it's built into your social life or into a habit," she said. "Another challenge can be difficult to get into sleep. Often when people stop drinking, it becomes tough for them to fall asleep."

Dry January can be dangerous for some who give up booze, particularly heavy drinkers who can experience withdrawal. Symptoms include tremors in the hand, shakes and sweating.

"The best thing to do is to talk to your physician or other medical professional If you're going to do it and are worried that you might have withdrawal. You might be able to get some medications to help with withdrawal. There's also medications that help with craving, and that might be right for you as well,” Ritchie said.

Goal to get fit? App offers free fitness classes, gym visits for 30 days https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/money/goal-to-get-fit-app-offers-free-fitness-classes-gym-visits-for-30-days/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 19:34:39 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688144 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- As consumers face a moral test of how long New Year resolutions will last, one app promises free workout classes, and gym visits nearby -- a chance to find an enjoyable workout regiment.

For 30 days, users of ClassPass will receive credits to use toward palates, yoga, boxing and gym visits on your own, according to their website.

Promoted as a "credit-based membership" granting access to "gyms, salons and spas," ClassPass terms and conditions indicate consumers can get 43 credits to use in one month for free, (an $89 value) but consumers are limited to a studio or gym visit just once; no double-dipping allowed.

ClassPass' online locator lists many courses and gyms in the metro Washington region.

A recent Forbes survey found that on average, New Year resolutions last just shy of 4 months.

Rather than feeling burn-out from one workout, ClassPass could offer a shakeup in your regiment by using available credits for different workouts.

Other local fitness discounts to start the year include Montgomery County's free fitness passes for residents to access gyms, game rooms and community recreation centers.

Fairfax County says consumers can receive 15% off annual memberships for their rec centers, tracks, classes and more; a discount that lasts through January 31.
