This U.S. state named 'most dangerous' for two-wheeled vehicles https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/us-and-world/this-u-s-state-named-most-dangerous-for-two-wheeled-vehicles/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 00:08:25 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/this-u-s-state-named-most-dangerous-for-two-wheeled-vehicles/ HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A fun joyride or a fatality waiting to happen? A recent survey completed by Anidjar and Levine ruled Hawaii the most dangerous state for cyclists and motorcyclists.

The study gave the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data on fatal collisions between the years of 2017 and 2021 in order to compare the amount of total fatal crashes to total fatal crashes involving two-wheeled vehicles.

“Hawaii is a beautiful place to cycle, with stunning views and weather, bike tourism is on the rise,” said an Anidjar and Levine spokesperson.

According to reports, Hawaii had a total of 483 fatal crashes overall, 21 of them involving cyclists and 130 of them involving a motorcycle. The state had the highest percentage of two-wheeled fatal incidents in comparison to total fatal incidents at 31.26%.

“Motorcycles are also a common mode of transport but this data demonstrates that pedal and motorcyclists need to take to the road with caution, and remain doubly alert and aware of their surroundings, but also that all road users are responsible for each others’ safety," said the spokesperson.

The island of Oahu ended 2023 with 55 traffic fatalities. The last fatality involving a cyclist occurred on Dec. 4, when a bicyclist was involved in a motor vehicle collision after turning into a vehicle’s path, launching them into the roadway.

Riding into 2024, there have been multiple motor vehicle collisions and incidents, some involving two-wheeled vehicles. The most recent incident happened on Jan. 3, involving an attempted murder in Makiki after a car struck a moped.

However, the latest incidents involving motorcycles, mopeds, and cyclists have not resulted in fatalities.

Standing water creates congestion in Takoma Park https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/maryland/montgomery-county/standing-water-creates-congestion-in-takoma-park/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 22:22:58 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1689292 TAKOMA PARK, Md. In a community advisory, Takoma Park Police said the intersection of New Hampshire Ave. and eastbound University Blvd. was experiencing traffic congestion due to heavy rain.

They advised drivers to avoid the intersection if possible and reduce speed to ensure better control of vehicles in the standing water.

Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said that an occupied vehicle got stranded in the intersection. There was "significant ponding" in the roadway, he said in a post on the X platform.

Person steals car with puppies in Southeast DC https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/washington-dc/person-steals-car-with-puppies-inside-in-southeast-dc/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 21:52:46 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1689284 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Metropolitan Police Department said a person stole a car with multiple puppies still inside in Southeast D.C. on Saturday afternoon.

Police said that at about noon, the victim left their car on and unlocked with about eight puppies inside in the 1700 block of U St. Southeast.

Officers said the victim had their car keys with them.

An unknown suspect then took the car with the puppies inside.

"I really hope they find them," said Tearia Watkins, whose mother lives near where the crime happened.

This is the second known case involving a stolen dog in the District in less than a week.

Police reunited "Lola" with her owner on Wednesday. They said someone brought the dog to the police station after two suspects took her on New Year's Eve after they attacked her owner inside her Southeast home.

Police are still looking for the suspects in both incidents.

"I don't know if people are selling them for profit or if people are just, you know, wanting to make pets from somebody else's pet. I'm not sure," Watkins said.

Anyone with information is asked to call D.C. Police.

Trump tells Iowans to 'get over' recent school shooting: 'We have to move forward' https://www.dcnewsnow.com/hill-politics/trump-tells-iowans-to-get-over-recent-school-shooting-we-have-to-move-forward/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 21:18:33 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/trump-tells-iowans-to-get-over-recent-school-shooting-we-have-to-move-forward/ (The Hill) — Former President Donald Trump shared his condolences for the victims and their families of a recent school shooting in Iowa during a campaign stop in the Hawkeye State Friday — but then urged his supporters to "move forward."

"I want to send our support and our deepest sympathies to the victims and families touched by the terrible school shooting yesterday in Perry, Iowa,” Trump said during a campaign rally in Sioux City.

“It’s just horrible, so surprising to see it here," he added. "But have to get over it, we have to move forward."

His somewhat harsh rhetoric comes after a gunman entered Perry High School on Thursday morning, the first day back from winter break, with a pump action shotgun and handgun. He shot and killed one student, and left several others injured — including the school principal, authorities confirmed.

The suspect, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, then shot and killed himself as law enforcement responded, the police said. They did not comment on whether they found any potential motive.

The shooting occurred just miles from where Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, seen as Trump's closest ally in the race, was scheduled to hold an event the same day. The entrepreneur's campaign canceled the event and held private prayer instead.

Ramaswamy predicted politicians would respond to the incident with calls for gun control, criticizing them for what he said are "knee-jerk policy reactions." Instead, the GOP hopeful said the focus of legislation should be on mental health.

“The temptation is just pass some law, paper and over and say we did something in response to this,” he said. “You mark my words: Tomorrow, if not later today, you’re going to hear calls for, ‘Stop the guns, that’s the problem,’ sweeping under the rug this real ailment at the heart and soul of our nation and our culture that has spread to the entire next generation and to the unit of the family. The loss of purpose.”

Rival Nikki Haley, the former U.N. ambassador who has gained momentum in the polls, gave a similar argument.

“We have to deal with the cancer that is mental health. We have to,” Haley told voters at a CNN town hall in Des Moines on Thursday evening, later adding "What we see is that 80 percent of mass shooters are in some sort of crisis at the time that they do that."

"We have got to do better. The problem is we don’t have enough mental health therapists," she said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has focused much on his presidential campaign on Iowa, voiced support for Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) — who endorsed him for 2024 — and local law enforcement following the shooting. He too said the focus should be on mental health.

Their comments come as the Iowa caucuses — which will kickstart primary voting season for the 2024 GOP primary — are set to take place in just over a week. The candidates have been on the ground in the state this week vying for support ahead of the Jan. 15 caucuses.

Trump still remains the clear front-runner in the race, leading with 51.6 percent support, according to Iowa polling averages from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ. DeSantis trails in second place at 18 percent, while Haley closely follows at 17.1 percent.

Alaska Airlines grounding Boeing 737 Max 9 fleet for inspection after window blows out from PDX-departing flight https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/us-and-world/alaska-airlines-grounding-boeing-737-max-9-fleet-for-inspection-after-window-blows-out-from-pdx-departing-flight/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 20:03:39 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/alaska-airlines-grounding-boeing-737-max-9-fleet-for-inspection-after-window-blows-out-from-pdx-departing-flight/ PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Alaska Airlines is temporarily grounding its fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after a flight heading to Ontario, California had to make an emergency return landing to Portland when a portion of the aircraft blew out mid-air shortly after takeoff on Friday evening, the CEO announced in a statement.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 originally departed from Portland International Airport around 5 p.m. and then turned around after reaching an altitude of 16,000 feet when the incident happened. The plane landed safely at PDX shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Social media video appeared to show that one of the passenger window panels had been blown out.

The flight included 171 passengers and six crew members, Alaska Airlines officials confirmed to KOIN 6.

In a statement to CBS News, the Federal Aviation Administration said the crew reported a “pressurization issue,” which the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating.

The Boeing 737 Max 9 flight was certified in November 2023. Boeing said it has a technical team standing by to support the investigations.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Friday, Alaska Airlines CEO, Ben Minicucci reacted to the incident, stating:

At Alaska Airlines, safety is our foundational value and the most important thing we focus on every day. Following tonight’s event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary step of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft. Each aircraft will be returned to service only after completion of full maintenance and safety inspections. We anticipate all inspections will be completed in the next few days.

I am personally committed to doing everything we can to conduct this review in a timely and transparent way.

We are working with Boeing and regulators to understand what occurred tonight, and will share updates as more information is available. The NTSB is investigating this event and we will fully support their investigation.

My heart goes out to those who were on this flight – I am so sorry for what you experienced. I am so grateful for the response of our pilots and flight attendants. We have teams on the ground in Portland assisting passengers and are working to support guests who are traveling in the days ahead.

-Ben

It wasn't immediately clear whether there were any reported injuries in the incident, but one passenger said a teenage boy had his shirt ripped off and his mother saved him from getting pulled out of the plane.

“The oxygen masks dropped down, and I look to my left to hear and see wind blasting, with a piece of the wall gone,” said passenger Elizabeth Le. “There was no one in the window seat but a mom and her teenage son sitting [on] the aisle.”

One passenger told KOIN 6 about the reaction from others on the plane.

“Everyone was very calm, actually. It kind of helped. Everyone was just focused on making sure we were back on the ground safely,” he said.
